Volunteer with us

Join 1st Irthlingborough Scout Group
Make a Difference. Have Fun. Gain More Than You Give.
At 1st Irthlingborough Scout Group, we believe volunteering should feel rewarding, enjoyable, and achievable — not daunting.
Whether you have lots of time or just a little, whether you’ve been involved in Scouting before or not, there’s a place for you here.
- You don’t need special skills.
- You don’t need to know anything about Scouting already.
- You just need a willingness to help — we’ll support you with the rest.
Why Volunteer with Us?
Volunteering with Scouts is about far more than activities and meetings. It’s about people.
By giving a bit of your time, you’ll:
- Help young people grow in confidence, skills, and independence
- Be part of a friendly, supportive local community
- Learn new skills and gain recognised experience
- Build confidence and leadership you can use elsewhere in life
- Have fun, make friends, and do something genuinely worthwhile
Many of our volunteers are surprised by how much they get back from being involved.
A Proud History — And a Bright Future

We are incredibly proud of our heritage.
Founded in February 1908, 1st Irthlingborough Scout Group is the 7th oldest Scout Group in the world, with a continuous history stretching back over 100 years.
Generations of local young people have grown up through our group — and today, we continue that tradition in a modern, welcoming, and inclusive way. Our history gives us strong roots, but our focus is firmly on the future.
Ways You Can Get Involved
There’s no “one-size-fits-all” role. Every contribution matters, and all roles are supported.
Sectional Helper
A great way to get started
You’ll help out at meetings or activities alongside experienced leaders — no planning required.
- Time commitment: As little as a few evenings a month
- Ideal for: Parents, grandparents, carers, or anyone wanting to try volunteering
- Why it’s rewarding: You’ll see young people enjoy themselves, grow in confidence, and learn new skills — often while having a laugh yourself
Assistant Section Leader
More involvement, shared responsibility
You’ll support the running of a section, helping deliver activities and encourage young people.
- Time commitment: Usually weekly during term time, shared across a team
- Ideal for: Those who enjoy working with people and want to build confidence
- What you gain: Leadership experience, teamwork skills, and nationally recognised training
Section Leader
Lead, inspire, and make a lasting impact
You’ll lead a section, supported by assistants and helpers — you’re never expected to do this alone.
- Time commitment: Regular involvement, fully supported
- Why people love it: Watching young people develop because of the experiences you help create
- Support: Training, mentoring, and a strong team around you
Trustee Board Member
Support Scouting behind the scenes
This role helps keep the group running smoothly and sustainably.
- Time commitment: A small number of meetings each year
- Ideal for: Anyone with skills or experience in finance, administration, buildings, HR, or general organisation
- Why it matters: You help ensure Scouting continues for future generations
Group Lead Volunteer (GLV) (formerly Group Scout Leader)
This role supports the whole group by coordinating, encouraging, and helping leaders succeed.
- You won’t be doing everything yourself
- Focus: People, support, and direction
- Impact: Helping a historic Scout Group continue to thrive
Training, DBS & Support — Made Simple
We understand that training and checks can sound worrying at first — but we make it straightforward and supportive.
Training
All volunteers receive full training, tailored to their role. Training is:
- Flexible and modular
- A mix of online and in-person
- Completed at your own pace
- Fully supported
DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)
A DBS check is required for safeguarding. This:
- Protects young people
- Protects volunteers
- Helps everyone feel safe and confident
We guide you through the process step by step.
Ongoing Support
You’ll never be left to figure things out alone. You’ll have:
- Friendly support from the group
- A mentor
- Local and national Scouting support
You Don’t Need to Commit Straight Away
The best way to understand Scouting is to come and see it for yourself.
- Have a chat with us
- Visit a session
- Try a role with no pressure
There’s no expectation to commit before you’re ready.
